Kettle Of Fish Designs | Botanical Candle Lanterns workshop | Thursday 24th April 2025
6-9pm
Suitable for ages 12+ & Adults
Come and join local artist Karen Kench from Kettle of Fish Designs for her fabulous candle shade workshop where you will be shown how to use freshly picked flowers, leaves and grasses to create two completely unique candle lanterns.
Karen will guide you through the process, helping you create a design using your chosen stems, before transferring them onto the lantern material and backing it with a cotton canvas. These canvasses will be carefully pressed to give a rustic painterly effect before being rolled on copper rings, just like a mini lampshade, to create your lanterns. Make a matching pair or two totally different lanterns. It’s up to you how creative and wild you want to be! The lanterns then sit on a small cork base and are lit by little battery powered tea lights.
Once finished, your candle lanterns will give a gorgeous gentle light and can be used to give a warm glow to the corner of a room, as a nighlight by the bed or (my favourite) as accompaniments to a relaxing bath at the end of the day.
We will end the workshop with a candle-lit supper of delicious homemade soup and salads over in the walled garden.
This workshop is suitable for beginners.
You will be provided with all the materials you need, including the plant material which will be gathered from the walled garden and surrounding woodland.

Karen is an artist, designer and maker based in the town of Yarm. Originally from Sheffield and with a degree in Fine Art, Kettle of Fish Designs came about as a result of her own long and fruitless searches for things that she felt truly represented her style and taste in art, jewellery and interiors.
Specialising in bespoke fabrics, lampshades and wall art, she has developed an innovative technique for printing images directly onto plaster and fabric. Her work has been used by stylists and interior designers who are sourcing original, beautifully made items for show homes, window dressing and magazine shoots like Kip Hideaways, Country Living and DeVol
She says “An important part of my work ethos is sustainability. I reuse and recycle as much as I possibly can and love turning everyday and discarded items into something useful, beautiful and unique. This chimes well with my everyday lifestyle, of being a collector (some might say hoarder!) and my ethos of never really throwing anything away because it might just ‘come in’ one day!
I like to look sideways at things, seeking out original ideas and possibilities, trying to find a new purpose for something ordinary.”
